Care & Instructions

If your wound was covered by a topical steri-strip, nothing needs to be done until your follow-up appointment. During this follow-up appointment, your doctor will provide you with follow-up care instructions.

If your wound was not covered by a steri-strip, apply bacitracin ointment to the wound twice a day. Gently wipe off the old ointment before applying new bacitracin. Call the Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group’s office at (310) 275-6600 from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM. If it is after normal business hours, please call the 24-hour hotline at 1-855-STITCH-LA (1-855-784-8245), and you will be connected to the plastic surgeon on call.

Can I go to the gym or participate in physical activity during the healing process?

Ask your doctor at the time of your treatment. Levels of physical activity depend on the location and size of the wound.

Is it okay if my wound gets wet?

You can get it wet in the shower, but do not submerge your wound in a bath or go swimming.

Will my stitches need to be removed?

Ask your doctor. There are two types of sutures – one kind that dissolves and another kind that needs to be removed.

Can I do anything to improve the appearance of a scar?

After your wound has healed apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, one that contains Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, or simply cover the area when going outside. Skin is vulnerable when it is healing so it is more susceptible to damage from the sun’s rays. Everyone heals differently. Your doctor will evaluate your scar during your follow-up appointment and discuss scar treatment options if necessary, including scar massage therapy.
